Alex Kosachov — Principal Data Architect
Alex Kosachov · Fredericton, NB

17 Years. One Data Architecture. Built to Last.

In 2009, Alex joined SCG Global — a maritime vessel management company — as its first software engineer, and began building the data architecture of what would become an 8-product integrated enterprise platform. Canonical data models across 8 products. Schema standardization that replaced fragmented local conventions with platform-wide discipline. A data contract codified as a 15-year backward-compatible API that survived 316 migrations without a failure. Multi-database per-tenant sovereignty across 27 vessel instances. A Kafka-based Exchange that decoupled the portfolio before there were 8 products to decouple.

The engineering challenge had a particular shape: commercial vessels operate with intermittent or zero internet connectivity, are subject to Port State Control inspection, and cannot afford operational downtime. Every architectural decision reflected those constraints — offline-first replication, AES-256-CBC cross-runtime encryption before legal review asked for it, legal-grade audit trails (1.4M+ financial entries, 2.9M PaperTrail crew events) years before Bureau Veritas auditors asked to see them. Maritime's regulated-industry discipline maps directly to HIPAA, FHIR, USCDI, and PHI / PII governance — the pattern language transfers; healthcare-specific vocabulary is a 30-day ramp target.

For 17 years Alex has built and owned the data architecture of the platform. The role titles changed — Senior Developer, Director of Engineering, Chief Technology Officer. The work — strategic, cross-cutting data architecture — didn't. A 12-engineer team delivered scope comparable to competitor platforms running 40+; a three-year succession arc resolved the single-threaded-custodian pattern, and the platform now operates without him as a bottleneck. In 2022, Alex directed a complete infrastructure relocation from on-premise Ukraine to AWS during active wartime operations — Starlink and backup power across the team, 100% operational continuity, zero data loss.

Alex is a Permanent Resident of Canada, based in Fredericton, NB, and is open to Ontario relocation for the right role.

The Record Behind the Platform

Built by a Team of Under 12
Comparable maritime PMS platforms — AMOS, ShipManager, Helm CONNECT — are developed by organisations of 40+ people. Shipvisor™ and the full SCG Global platform were built and operated by a team that never exceeded 12, and managed the same operational scope with superior reliability metrics.

Three Team Rotations, Zero Disruption
Over 17 years, the engineering team turned over three complete times. In each transition, Alex personally closed the technical gaps — stepping back into hands-on development while identifying and growing replacement talent. The platform never stopped shipping. 92 releases, zero data loss.

🛡️
Wartime Infrastructure Relocation
In 2022, with the engineering team in Ukraine, Alex directed a complete migration from on-premise systems to AWS during active wartime operations. Starlink terminals and backup power deployed for all team members. The platform maintained 100% operational continuity. Fleet operations were not affected.

📊
10+ Years of Unbroken Data Integrity
The oldest maintenance job in the Shipvisor™ production database dates to September 2014. Every record since — across 2,111,584 maintenance events, 597,661 spare parts entries, and $226.7M in financial operations — is intact. No record has been lost through a release, migration, team rotation, or wartime move.

🎓
Bureau Veritas Certified & PhD Validated
Alex personally led the Bureau Veritas audit and certification of Shipvisor™ PMS — presenting the system to classification society auditors. Heatech's vessel performance analytics were formally recognised by a PhD maritime researcher as "one of the most comprehensive and correct implementations of its kind."

🔐
Legal-Grade Data Integrity by Design
Heatech's AES-256-CBC encrypted vessel data files — operational for 11+ years — were later admitted as evidence in a legal dispute involving vessel performance data. This was an emergent outcome of a consistent commitment to cryptographic data integrity from day one. Not planned. Just built correctly.

🌐
Recognized Across Every Major Port Jurisdiction
The fleet holds USCG QUALSHIP 21 recognition from the U.S. Coast Guard and is rated "High Performance Company" by both the Paris MoU and Tokyo MoU — the two principal Port State Control bodies covering Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific. This status is earned through independently inspected operational excellence, not self-declared. The platform Alex built is a direct operational contributor to maintaining it.
